Frank Byrd, Chairman
Frank Byrd holds a Bachelors Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Virginia, as well as a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Xavier University. He retired from General Electric Aircraft Engines after thirty-five years working with airlines and aircraft companies around the world.
Mr. Byrd and his wife, Joanne have three grown children: Laurel, Jonathan, and Michael. Mrs. Byrd is a retired school teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Byrd have been active members of The Church of the Cross since 2004, and participate in various church ministries.
Mr. Byrd states: "I feel that I am called to be on the board in a leadership capacity to help grow and strengthen the school both academically and spiritually while maintaining the values and attributes that God has blessed us with thus far. It is very much my honor to be associated with the Cross Schools community of teachers, staff, parents and students as we move forward to serve God and our community."
A favorite Bible verse is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son so that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Liz Maybank, Vice-Chair
Liz Maybank holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Duke University. Mrs. Maybank is a former school teacher and parent to Tad, Margaret and Joe. After college, she worked at a private school as a biology/life sciences teacher, middle/high school math teacher, French teacher and Director of Development. She retired from teaching to be a stay-at-home mom after Tad was born.
Mrs. Maybank and her husband Thomas have lived in Bluffton for eight years and have been members of the Church of the Cross since moving here. She also serves as a Sunday School teacher on the Calhoun Campus and Thomas serves as an usher for the 8:00 am Calhoun service. Mrs. Maybank has been very satisfied with the strong academics the school offers as well as the close relationship her children are forming with Christ.
A favorite Bible verse is Matthew 19:14: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
Carmen Traywick, Secretary
Carmen Traywick, MD is the owner and founder of May River Dermatology. Dr. Traywick is a native to South Carolina, growing up in Lexington and attending Emory University for undergraduate, medical school and Dermatology residency. She returned to Bluffton in 2009 where she and her husband started the medical practice. She is also the co-founder and co-owner of LUX, a Medical Spa.
Dr. Traywick is married to Bernie Traywick and they have three children who have been attending Cross Schools since age three. They share a love for Cross Schools and for The Church of the Cross where they are members. Dr. Traywick is passionate about Cross Schools' commitment to a strong academic education in a Christian environment.
A favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your pathways straight.”
Stephen Markwood, Treasurer
Stephen Markwood was President Emeritus of Alderson-Broaddus University, a church-related school. Dr. Markwood and his wife have two adult children and four grandchildren. They belong to the Church of the Cross where he has served as Chair of the Finance Committee and on the Vestry. Dr. Markwood treasures the devoted students, faculty, and staff of Cross Schools who provide an inspired education nurtured in a caring Christian community.
A favorite Bible verse is Matthew 22:37: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Brent Carlson, Athletic Programs
Brent Carlson is the PGA Head Golf Professional at the Hampton Hall Club. Mr. Carlson and his wife, Sue, have been members of the Church of the Cross for twelve years and have had all three of their children attend Cross Schools since Kindergarten. The school has been a place where their children have flourished, so Mr. Carlson feels fortunate and honored to serve in his capacity on the board. Mr. Carlson is the Cross Schools Golf Coach as well as the coach of the Boys Basketball Team.
A favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your pathways straight.”
Paul Halvorson, Building and Grounds
Paul Halvorson is owner and CEO of Halvorson Trane, an Iowa based provider of building comfort and energy solutions. Mr. Halvorson and his wife, Kaye, moved to the low country from Des Moines, Iowa and have been Church Of The Cross members for seven years. In addition to being a Cross School board member, Mr. Halvorson is a Stephens Minister and volunteers at God's Goods.
A favorite Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 13:11-12: "When I was a child, I spoke like a child. When I became a man, I gave up my childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part: then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known."
Lester Hardegree, Quantitative Analysis and Board Evaluation
Lester Hardegree is a retired university professor and administrator. He has undergraduate degrees in chemistry and medical laboratory science and graduate degrees in science education and higher education administration. He taught upper level courses and administered as Dean of Health in health science programs at community colleges and universities in the US and in the Middle East. Dr. Hardegree was also an expert witness in multiple medical malpractice lawsuits and a consultant for medical facilities. He and his wife, Johanna, have been active members of several ministries at The Church of the Cross since 2004.
Dr. Hardegree believes that all truth is God's truth and thus Christian education begins with God. A favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
John Parker, Long Range Planning
John Parker is a retired Marine Corps officer who spent over twenty years serving our nation. Following his military career, he worked in marketing and communications completing a second career as President and COO of Anderson Communications Group. He and his wife Elaine have been members of The Church of the Cross for over nine years and continue to serve in a variety of ministries.
Mr. Parker feels blessed every time he walks through the school and sees the wonderful smiling faces of the children. A favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make your pathways straight.”
Richard Peacock, Legal
Richard Peacock is a Member of The Citadel Class of 1998. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, and received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from The University of Richmond School of Law. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 2006. In 2007, Mr. Peacock and his family moved to Bluffton and in 2009, Mr. Peacock opened Peacock Law Group of the Lowcountry, LLC.
Mr. Peacock is a member of the South Carolina Bar. He is a past president of a Business Networking International (BNI) chapter and a current member. He and his wife, Claudia, are members of the Church of the Cross, and have two children who attend Cross Schools. Mr. Peacock sits on the Board for the Men of The Cross (Men's Ministry) at the church. He has previously served as a Board Member for Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. He is the 2015 favorite Bluffton Attorney Winner of the Readers' Choice Awards of Hilton Head Monthly magazine.
